Ecology and human influences

Food webs connect producers, consumers and decomposers.

Learning objectives

The big idea

Food webs connect producers, consumers and decomposers. Carbon and nitrogen cycle through organisms and their environment; population growth depends on resources, disease, predation and competition.

Habitat loss, pollution, climate change and overharvesting can reduce biodiversity. Eutrophication links nutrient enrichment with increased growth, decomposition and oxygen depletion. Conservation decisions combine ecological evidence with social needs rather than treating every intervention as equally effective.

Worked example

A sample quadrat has 8 plants per m². Estimate plants in 20 m² if density is representative.

Follow the solution

Multiply density by area: 8×20=160, subject to representative sampling.

Investigate and explain

Using the worked example as supplied data, predict the effect of changing one condition. Draw a labelled model, record your reasoning and identify a variable that would need controlling. No human, animal or microbial experiment is required.

No exact PhET model is claimed for this topic. Use diagrams and supplied-data reasoning instead.

Check your understanding

1. Which organisms return nutrients through decomposition?

  1. Only top predators
  2. Decomposers
  3. Only flowering plants
Check the answer and reasoning

Decomposers

Decomposers break down organic material and release substances that re-enter nutrient cycles.

2. A sample quadrat has 8 plants per m². Estimate plants in 20 m² if density is representative.

  1. 28
  2. 2.5
  3. 160
Check the answer and reasoning

160

Multiply density by area: 8×20=160, subject to representative sampling.

3. Does eutrophication necessarily mean that oxygen concentration rises permanently?

  1. No
  2. Yes
  3. Only at night
Check the answer and reasoning

No

Decomposition of increased organic material can consume dissolved oxygen, harming aquatic organisms.
