Cells, structures and scale

Cells are small systems with a membrane controlling exchange and cytoplasm where many reactions occur.

Learning objectives

The big idea

Cells are small systems with a membrane controlling exchange and cytoplasm where many reactions occur. Most plant and animal cells contain a nucleus, while specialised cells may lose or modify structures.

Plant cells usually have a cellulose wall and may contain chloroplasts and a large permanent vacuole. A microscope image is magnified, so its displayed size is not its actual size; drawings show selected structures rather than every molecule.

Equations and relationships

magnification = image size / actual size

Use the same length units in numerator and denominator.

Worked example

A 2 mm image represents a cell 0.02 mm long. Find magnification.

Follow the solution

Divide image size by actual size in the same units: 2/0.02=100.

Investigate and explain

Using the worked example as supplied data, predict the effect of changing one condition. Draw a labelled model, record your reasoning and identify a variable that would need controlling. No human, animal or microbial experiment is required.

No exact PhET model is claimed for this topic. Use diagrams and supplied-data reasoning instead.

Check your understanding

1. Which structure surrounds the cytoplasm of both typical plant and animal cells?

  1. Cellulose wall
  2. Chloroplast
  3. Cell membrane
Check the answer and reasoning

Cell membrane

Both cell types have a selectively permeable membrane.

2. A 2 mm image represents a cell 0.02 mm long. Find magnification.

  1. ×100
  2. ×0.01
  3. ×10
Check the answer and reasoning

×100

Divide image size by actual size in the same units: 2/0.02=100.

3. Do all plant cells contain chloroplasts?

  1. Yes
  2. No
  3. Only when viewed under a microscope
Check the answer and reasoning

No

Many non-photosynthetic cells, such as root cells, normally lack chloroplasts.
